How LED Virtual and Water Vapor Fireplaces Are Similar

Both Are Powered by Electric

As alternatives to wood or gas, both linear LED and vapor mist electric fireplaces are powered by electric and provide smokeless, ventless fireplace experiences.

Standard Outlet or Hardwire

In general, free standing vapor fireplaces can be plugged into a standard outlet, while recessed vapor models need to be hardwired. Recessed Touchstone Electric Fireplaces offer more flexibility and can be plugged into a standard outlet, and hardwiring is optional. Hardwiring requires an electrician, which can add to the installation cost.

Both Have Energy Efficient LED Lights

Both vapor mist and traditional LED electric fireplaces create the illusion of live flames with LED lights. The flames in both are cool to the touch and non-combustible. In vapor fireplaces, the LED lights shine through the rising mist, emulating the effect of smoke and swaying flames.

Built-in Heat

Depending on the models, both vapor mist and LED electric fireplaces can have built-in heaters that provide a secondary heat source. They do not emit the same amount of heat as a gas or wood burning fireplace.

How Water Vapor Mist Fireplaces Work

Water vapor fireplaces are essentially humidifiers. They require water to produce the mist that rises into the warm air. Some models have a refillable water reservoir while others require a water line.

Needs a water line to the unit or manual water reservoir refills
Risk of water line leaks with damage to walls and flooring
Frequent cleaning required to remove water stains and mineral deposits
Adds moisture to room, may not be ideal in humid climates
Standing water and moisture can lead to mold, mildew and bacterial growth

More Work and Maintenance

Because water is needed to create the flame effect, vapor mist fireplaces require more work and maintenance than a virtual LED fireplace. Depending on the model, you will either need to regularly refill the water reservoir or have a plumber add a water line. This water line uses tubing, just like a refrigerator or ice maker, and may limit where you can install the water vapor fireplace.

Risk of Water Leaks

Water vapor fireplaces that require a water line will need plumbing work for installation, adding to the cost. Just like the water line to a refrigerator, this tubing can be susceptible to leaks and lead to damage of your wall, flooring and other materials.

Water Stains and Mineral Buildup

Standard LED electric fireplaces require minimal work – simply dust or use a gentle glass cleaner when necessary. Mist fireplaces need more maintenance to function well. Calcium and other minerals in your water can build up and reduce the mist flame quality. The vapor can also leave water stains on the glass, especially if you have hard water.

Risk of Mold, Mildew and Bacterial Growth

The humidifier that creates the mist adds moisture to your room, which can potentially promote mildew and mold. The standing water is also susceptible to bacterial growth, mold and mildew.
